What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

As a career switcher, I did not know much about hospital pharmacy. I joined VSHP to gain more insight into hospital pharmacy and to network with other like-minded professionals.

What school are you attending and what year?

I am a 3^rd year student at VCU School of Pharmacy.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

Currently, I work at Virginia Department of Health (VDH) helping to distribute covid vaccines to clinics throughout the state. Recently, we have added monkeypox vaccine to our inventory of vaccines to ship throughout the state.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

Pharmacy is a constantly evolving field. Keep an open mind and try to explore and get involved in many experiences as possible. Your classmates and professors will someday be your future colleagues so treat them with the professional courtesy that you would like to be treated with.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I love to travel and explore nature.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

I had a wonderful experience in Lisbon, Portugal! Definitely worth a revisit. I thought Portugal would be similar to Spain, but they are vastly different and each place has something unique to offer. However, Lisbon is definitely a jewel and lovely place to holiday.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

The opportunity to attend continuing education activities. They provided a space to network with other technicians from different pharmacies and learn from their work experiences. I have remained a member to be part of the growth of the organization and happy to see more technician involvement.

Where have you trained or worked?

My pharmacy technician career started at Walgreens, from there I worked at Chippenham Medical Center and then Cardinal Health Nuclear Medicine. After working in the field, I transitioned to Pharmacy Technician education at Virginia College in Richmond.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

Currently, I work at Piedmont Virginia Community College as the Program Director/Associate Professor. I have the pleasure of training new pharmacy technicians to work in either outpatient or inpatient pharmacies focusing on patient-centered care.

What advice would you give to a new technician?

I would advise a new technician to be present in the training process. To soak up the experience and pay close attention to detail. The skills and knowledge that are learned while working as a pharmacy technician will help in advancing their career and in their day-to-day lives but most importantly to be patient and kind.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

During the pandemic I discovered that I like to hike. I love seeing animals in their natural habitat and observing what nature has to offer.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

I love any place with sun and a beach.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

My initial motivation to join VSHP stemmed from my interest in learning about the different roles pharmacists can play in health care-systems. I thought by joining this organization, I would gain useful insights and resources to help me determine which avenue I’d like to pursue in pharmacy once I graduate.

What school are you attending and what year?

Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Pharmacy and I am a member of the Class of 2025.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

Yes, I work has a pharmacy intern at Johnston-Willis HCA Hospital in Midlothian, VA.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

I would advise that they take the time to conduct informational interviews with people within the profession and setup shadowing opportunities in a wide variety of settings to gain as much experience and information as possible within the field.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work and studying, I enjoy baking, painting, and reading. I also enjoy playing in a local adult soccer league in Richmond.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

My favorite place to vacation is Colorado in the summertime. I enjoy visiting family and hiking in the mountains while taking in all the beautiful scenery.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I was drawn to VSHP due to the numerous opportunities to network with clinical health-system pharmacists and gain mentorship from them, such as the annual CV Review and Mentor-Mentee program. The goals of this organization aligned with my interests in health-system pharmacy, which is why I have been a member for 4 years since I was a first year pharmacy student.

What school are you attending and what year?

I am a fourth year at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

I currently work as a pharmacy intern at Walgreens Pharmacy.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

During your P1 year, be as involved as you can in pharmacy-related extracurricular activities, whether that be shadowing, fulfilling a leadership position, or joining an organization. This was incredibly helpful for me to explore different areas of pharmacy and build strong leadership skills that I have been able to use in rotations. Also, pharmacy is a small world! Build good relationships with your professors, mentors, classmates, and upperclassmen. Their guidance and insight will be incredibly valuable in every year of pharmacy school and beyond. Good luck!

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy exploring restaurants and breweries around town!

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

When I came to pharmacy school, I had very little pharmacy experience. I joined VSHP to learn more about health system pharmacy and get opportunities to shadow and receive mentorship from a variety of pharmacists.

I’m a P2 at VCU School of Pharmacy.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

I currently work in the retail/community practice setting at CVS.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

Go in with an open mind and be willing to say yes to as many opportunities and experiences as you can.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I love swimming and reading!

What is your favorite place to vacation?

My favorite place to vacation is the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I first joined VSHP as a pharmacy student as a way to learn more about hospital pharmacy as a career and access resources such as the Residency Showcase and student programming at the Fall Meeting. Now as a practicing pharmacist I enjoy the continuing education opportunities available and ability to network with other health-system pharmacists across the state.

Where did you go to pharmacy school?

I graduated from VCU School of Pharmacy in 2019.

Where have you trained or worked?

I completed a PGY1 residency with Sentara Healthcare Hampton Roads and am currently an inpatient clinical pharmacist at Augusta Health in Fishersville, VA.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

Augusta Health is a 255-bed independent community hospital primarily serving the Staunton-Augusta County-Waynesboro region. I mainly work with our progressive care/step-down unit, general medical unit, and central staffing.

What advice would you give to student pharmacists?

Take advantage of a variety of volunteer opportunities – the experiences you have during these events will provide exposure to a wide range of patient populations and practice settings and can also lead to lifelong professional connections.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy going to the beach, reading, crafting, and spending time with my dachshund, Miley.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

Outer Banks, NC every summer with my family

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

As a P1 I wanted to get involved in a big organization that would expose me to many different opportunities for shadowing and volunteering. I have an interest in Health-System pharmacy, so this organization felt perfect for me.

What school are you attending and what year?

I am currently a P2 attending Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

I work at a Kroger pharmacy and also am applying for a position at a hospital pharmacy.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

Look into all the organizations that you can become a part of, and keep your options open for all avenues of pharmacy. You never know what you may want to do until later on in your education. I find new interests in every area of pharmacy that I learn about.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy traveling and hiking. I love exploring new places, whether it be on a mountain or at a beach.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

My favorite place to vacation is anywhere warm! I love Miami, the Caribbean, really any place that has great attractions to see and warm temperatures to enjoy them in.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I joined VSHP to connect with other pharmacy professionals in Virginia as well the various educational opportunities offered, including CE credits.

Where have you trained or worked?

I worked retail pharmacy (Rite Aid) for 14 years before transitioning to hospital pharmacy- Riverside Health System, including Riverside Regional Medical Center and Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg. I am nationally certified as well as licensed in the state of VA.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

I currently serve as a Pharmacy 340B Analyst for Riverside Health System, responsible for oversight of the 340B program and maintaining compliance.

What advice would you give to a new technician?

Pharmacy can be stressful, but it is so rewarding! The work that we do is important and the world of pharmacy is constantly changing. A career is pharmacy can take you even further than you could imagine!

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Crafting, spending as much time as possible with my niece and nephew, bringing awareness to and fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer research.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

Anywhere with a beach! My husband and I love taking cruises to the Caribbean!

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I’ve always found that joining state and local pharmacy organizations is a great way to network, keep up to date with practice advancements, and learn from my peers. I joined VSHP when I first moved (back) to Virginia as a pharmacist.

Where did you go to pharmacy school?

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy

Where have you trained or worked?

I completed a PGY1 pharmacy residency at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, and a PGY2 ambulatory care residency at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. My first post-residency position was as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at VCU Health in the Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Anticoagulation clinics.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

I now work as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Shenandoah University. My position is co-funded by Valley Health, and my clinical practice sites are the Page Memorial Hospital primary care clinics, which are designated as Rural Health Clinics. I primarily manage diabetes and hypertension. Because of our remote location, my patients may struggle to seek specialty care, so I often get asked to provide recommendations in challenging situations for other therapeutic areas which keeps me on my toes!

What advice would you give to student pharmacists?

Pick a pharmacy organization and get involved. Don’t JUST join. Attend conferences. Get involved in a committee. Talk to students at other chapters. Volunteer at patient care events. I found as a student that in the middle of the semester it was common to feel overwhelmed with exams and learning new material, and going to a conference or volunteering helped refresh me and reminded me of the reason I started training to become a pharmacist. I can say I know pharmacists in almost every state because of my involvement with pharmacy organizations as a student and early in my career.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

My husband and I adopted our first puppy last year, and since then my biggest hobby has been training her and doing different dog activities. We taught her scent work, and she can now very reliably find a single drop of birch oil hidden in the house or in our yard. So, if anyone ever misplaces their birch beer, we’ve got your back.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

I don’t have a regular vacation spot, but my goal is to visit every national park in my lifetime. One of my favorites has been Zion, and I’m excited to continue to explore the parks in the southwest US.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I chose to join my student chapter of VSHP due to the unique opportunities for networking, career development, and residency preparation. I was especially intrigued by the VSHP Mentorship Program because I viewed it as a fantastic opportunity to gain mentorship and advice relating to specific fields of pharmacy that were of interest to me.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

I would highly recommend every P1 student joins VSHP and takes advantage of the VSHP Mentorship Program. It is extremely important to begin preparing for residency and career opportunities early on in pharmacy school and this is a crucial way to get started.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Outside of pharmacy, I am passionate about advocating for mental health awareness. I have also danced most of my life and continue to perform even as a pharmacy student!

What is your favorite place to vacation?

My grandparent’s live on the beach in a small town in New Jersey. This is my own little slice of heaven and my favorite place to be!

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I was an active member of the student VSHP chapter at VCU School of Pharmacy during my time in pharmacy school. After graduating, I continued my membership with VSHP due to the learning opportunities (ie CE’s and seminars). I also see the value in networking and fostering professional relationships within the pharmacy profession.

Where did you go to pharmacy school?

Where have you trained or worked?

I completed a PGY-1 residency at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina. After residency, I moved back to Richmond, VA and worked as an inpatient pharmacist with VCU Health Medical Center. I transitioned to a specialty pharmacist position with VCU Health Specialty Pharmacy where I worked primarily with solid-organ transplant recipients and patients with neurological conditions.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

Currently I work as a consultant clinical pharmacist for a government contracting company. I consult with several state Medicaid programs on their PDL and criteria for use for drugs. I also complete drug information requests and contribute to company clinical publications.

What advice would you give to student pharmacists?

I would encourage student pharmacists to take advantage of each opportunity to learn a new aspect of pharmacy. Oftentimes the career path you choose for yourself in pharmacy school is not exactly how things turn out. Embrace the journey and know you will always achieve what you decide to achieve.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I picked up baking during the start of the pandemic. I like to collect cookbooks and try new recipes each weekend.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

I love OBX beaches! I try to go every summer with my friends and family.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I was motivated by the opportunity to advocate for the advancement of Pharmacy Technicians in Virginia and for the networking opportunities.

Where have you trained or worked?

I received my diploma of Pharmacy Technician Studies at Virginia College in 2013. Since then I have worked at an independent and chain retail pharmacy and am currently working at VCU Health.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

I am a controlled substance technician. I am part of a small team responsible for dispensing, auditing, ordering, and monitoring the controlled substances throughout the health system, inpatient and outpatient.

What advice would you give to a new technician?

Be willing to learn and to take constructive criticism. It will only make you better and more knowledgeable of your profession.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I am a musician. I enjoy playing piano and drums and listening to all genres of music. I also love spending time with my 3 daughters doing outdoor activities whether it be sports or camping.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I joined VSHP in order to build a network with pharmacy professionals across the state. I was especially interested in VSHP’s various opportunities to give back to the profession through continuing education webinars and mentorship programs.

Where did you go to pharmacy school?

I attended Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Buies Creek, NC. One of my favorite aspects of attending school there was the opportunity for various learning opportunities and community service activities with other health care professional students such as DO, DPT, nursing, PA, etc.

Where have you trained or worked?

I completed my PGY-1 residency at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA and have continued to work there after finishing my residency.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

I have recently transitioned into a clinical staff pharmacist position that focuses on oncology, pain management, and palliative care. I am looking forward to establishing an advanced internal medicine rotation for students and residents that exposes them to the unique challenges of caring for patients with multiple co-morbidities such as cancer and chronic pain.

What advice would you give to student pharmacists?

Consider what facet of pharmacy practice interests you and pursue it! It may be a certain area of pharmacy practice that you research and eventually publish a paper or perhaps you may spearhead an interprofessional endeavor with other healthcare professional students to provide clinical services for an underserved area. Do not just focus on checking off boxes to make yourself a competitive candidate for residency rather pursue opportunities where you can make a difference in your school and community!

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I am an avid musician and love being able to combine my passion for classical music with Christian music as I play piano and lead choir at my church.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

Anywhere with my family! I especially enjoy international adventures and serving on medical mission trips.

Pharmacy is a very diverse and rewarding career but has undergone significant change since I first started working in a pharmacy in 1978. Depending on the goals and practice setting of the student, the student may want to consider PGY-1, -2, residency or even a PhD.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Hunting, Fishing, and Scuba diving. I have a 5-year plan to obtain my commercial pilots license (currently have private pilot license) as a second career for after I retire

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I joined VSHP through VCU’s Student Chapter of Virginia Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (SVSHP) during my P1 year. Since I have work experience in retail pharmacy, I wanted to learn more about clinical and health systems pharmacy. Our SVSHP chapter offers a shadowing program and various pharmacist panels, so I have learned more about clinical pharmacy positions. Throughout school, I have enjoyed becoming more involved with VSHP and SVSHP, as I have had the opportunity to gain leadership experience, participate in Legislative Day, present at the VSHP Fall Seminar, and join the Mentorship Program.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

I have been working for the CVS SimpleDose Pharmacy (retail practice setting) in Ashland, VA for over a year. As one of two interns at this site, I have learned more about the operations behind compliance packing and have contributed to the dispensing process at the high volume store. Prior to working at the CVS SimpleDose, I worked at Kroger for 4 years as a pharmacy technician and intern.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

My advice for students just starting their pharmacy journey is to become involved in organizations and to gain hands-on experience. Working, volunteering, and/or shadowing in the field of pharmacy you are interested in helps you to learn and verify your interests.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work and school, I enjoy running, golfing, watching baseball, and trying new restaurants.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

I enjoy spending time at the beach, and I have had the opportunity to travel to Florida throughout pharmacy school!

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

My pharmacist employment was at MCV Hospitals in Richmond (1972) and then at Chesapeake General in Chesapeake (actually open the pharmacy with Lloyd Ruona, Pharmacy Director- from Winchester Hospital) in Jan 1977 -- we stocked an empty pharmacy area with medications and got the IV Hood up a running a week before the opening. I joined VSHP in 1974 or so because it was an opportunity to be with other hospital pharmacists and see what was happening in their hospitals. I also joined VPHA for similar reasons and because many of my pharmacist colleagues and mentors were members.

Where did you go to pharmacy school?

VCU- MCV – Medical College of Virginia – in 1972 when the P-72’s graduated…. YES that will be FIFTY – Five-Zero years next year 2022- that we have been Pharmacists with all the changes and challenges – THE BEST PROFESSION - in my opinion

Where have you trained or worked?

Under grad - William & Mary and Longwood and ODU

MCV-VCU hospitals, Chesapeake General Hospital, Omnicare Pharmacies (Comp-U-Dose & several other names- currently CVS/Omnicare and some part-time with PharMerica, Sentara LongTerm Care and little retail coverage on occasion. Volunteering for the professional organizations (VSHP, VPHA, VBMRC)

Currently only doing volunteer pharmacist work with the Va Dept. of Health -VDH – with the Virginia Beach Medical Reserve Corps- VBMRC as a vaccinator and pharmacist volunteer. Follow a few neighbors to their MD visits and provide a Medication Review report to them for the physician if requested.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting: see above- RETIREMENT ROCKS… Volunteering Great… organizations seem to love Pharmacists--- which works well for me…

Also staying involved with your neighborhood-- Cape Story by the Sea my civic league (I was president for a decade with July 4 parades, Santa in the Park, Oyster Roasts, helping neighbors and causes… still active but NOT the PREZ!!)... stay active in CITY citizen organizations from the CAC- Citizens Advisory Committee- with the Police 2^nd precinct – monthly meetings to discuss precinct crime/concerns, VB Bayfront Advisory Commission etc… If you live there, GET active there… Have a VOICE

What advice would you give to student pharmacists?

YOU Have Chosen (or it may have Chosen YOU) a GREAT Profession- you can do amazing things for your patients, neighbors, schools, churches… be the role model you can be. Stay up to date on the medications/diseases, be active in your professional organizations and YOUR Community, be a resource and reasonable person to ALL. Encourage possible consideration of a Pharmacist career by example and by suggestion to someone that you believe would embrace the profession.

Of course, a daily walk on the Chesapeake Bay (ME) or any trail or neighborhood with outside venues preferred is healthy for body and soul… with a nice beverage of your choice as a reward for another day being alive and moving ….

What is your favorite place to vacation?

That would be my Pinkhouse on the Chesapeake Bay looking at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel where my evening view is the sunset over the first tunnel in the Summer. Virginia Beach has always been a favorite vacation spot when growing up in Blackstone, Va. Knew there was that summer week at Virginia Beach. Took some time but moved to Va Beach as a resident in 1977 and been here ever since. Trips to Australia and England with tour from Normandy to Paris to Austria to Belgium and Germany was a Great Adventure and enjoyed immensely but I am quite content on the Bay every day now.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I am very interested in pursuing a career in hospital pharmacy and possibly doing a residency. I found that my VSHP chapter offered countless opportunities to learn about all health system pharmacy avenues that you can pursue.

What school are you attending and what year?

I am a rising P3 at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

I worked in retail for 4 years and just recently left for a job working in an inpatient hospital pharmacy.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

Keep an open mind! You may think you know exactly what you want to do with your pharmacy degree when you start, but consider all your options- you never know what might peak your interest.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I love trying new food spots and breweries around Richmond!

What is your favorite place to vacation?

Anywhere that has a beach

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I was initially motivated knowing I could earn CEs by attending Fall/Spring Seminars. A pharmacist informed me how interesting the topics were and a great networking of meeting other technicians and pharmacist in our area.

Where have you trained or worked?

I have worked for Riverside Regional Medical Center (Newport News, VA) as a Senior Lead Pharmacy Technician for over 20 years.

I have also, taught pharmacy technician at New Horizons Adult Education Center (Hampton, VA)

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

I work in the inpatient pharmacy as the primary chemo IV pharmacy technicians and assist daily in the IV room preparing infusions, TPNs and routine IVs.

What advice would you give to a new technician?

The advice I would give to a new technician would be to gain as much experience in all aspects of a pharmacy technician. The pharmacy technician are given more responsibilities, as well as expanded. Don’t limit yourself!

The following fields have been added as a pharmacy technician duties/responsibility such as:

Ø Medications to Beds,
Ø Emergency Room – Medication Reconciliation Technician,
Ø IV Compounding Specialist,
Ø Diversion Technician Specialist,

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

My special interest are food critiquing, crocheting, reading, taking pictures and volunteering in my local community.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

My favorite place to vacation is the Caribbean. I love taking pictures/watching the waves on the beach at sunset. I have a love of Caribbean foods.

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

In school I was taught that I should maintain membership in my state and national organizations to help stay current on issues which impact the practice of pharmacy. Later, I recognized it also is a good way to network.

Where have you trained or worked? Sentara Hampton General Hospital, Winn Dixie Pharmacy (in Hampton), Carilion Clinic Roanoke Memorial Hospital

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

Carilion Clinic Roanoke Memorial Hospital is the largest hospital in the Carilion healthcare system. with 703 beds. I am one of the pediatric clinical pharmacists, covering primarily the pediatric unit & pediatric ICU. This is a children's hospital within an adult facility. We do have a robust pharmacy residency program, as well as rotations for pharmacy students.

What advice would you give to student pharmacists?

Take the pediatric elective! Pediatric pharmacy education is woefully under represented and most of our learners come to us with little to no pediatric knowledge.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

I play music (stringed instruments and keyboards) and sing. I also love to travel, and usually take my fiddle with me!

What is your favorite place to vacation?

I haven’t found it yet. Each place I visit is my new favorite!

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

I've been a practicing Pharmacy Technician in Southside Hampton Roads for 39 years. The VSHP meetings were a great way of keeping in touch with everyone, as well as accruing CEs.

Where have you trained or worked?

I joined the Navy in 1980 as a Hospital Corpsman, and received my Pharmacy Technician training at the Naval School of Health Sciences in Portsmouth in 1982. I was then stationed at the Admiral Joel T. Boone Clinic outpatient pharmacy, on what was then the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, where I was the lead, and narcotic vault, technician . Five years later, I returned to NSHS as a Master Training Specialist. I was also the senior instructor at two civilian Pharmacy Technician schools: Mansfield School of Business in the late 1980's, and Everest College in the mid 2010' s. I worked full-time at the old Naval Hospital's inpatient pharmacy as a civilian contractor for a year after leaving the Navy preparing IVs, and taking and entering orders. I began working evenings at what was then Chesapeake General Hospital beginning in 1985 while still on active duty, and full-time for a year after I was honorably discharged in 1989, then part-time again after my son was born. prepared sterile admixtures: IVs and IVPBs, chemos, and TPNs/hyperalimentation. In the 80's people could smoke in the pharmacy breakroom, and all IVs were in glass bottles! Between full- and part-time, I worked at CGH for 19 years. I left CGH in 2004 to accept a position at Radiology Services of Hampton Roads in Chesapeake, a nuclear pharmacy headed at the time by John Tabb, and now by Steve Mize, having worked with both of them at CGH. I was promoted to Lead Nuclear Pharmacy Technician in 2009 . In addition to drawing

sterile radioactive isotope doses, radio labeling white blood cells, and performing quality control analysis, as lead tech I also do scheduling, inventory management, and train radiologist residents and nuclear medicine technologists during their clinical rotations through our facility.

Describe your current area of practice and practice setting:

We are, by far, the largest nuclear pharmacy in the region. We prepare radiopharmaceuticals for the nuclear medicine departments in all regional Sentara hospitals and clinics (including Williamsburg and Albemarle) all regional Bon Secours hospitals and clinics, Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, and the vast majority of independent clinics and facilities.

What advice would you give to a new technician?

Stick with it! Pharmacists are being given significantly more responsibilities, which is going to require many of their previous responsibilities to be delegated to senior and more highly trained Pharmacy Technicians. A more experienced and highly trained technician, managing more responsibility, makes more money and has greater job satisfaction!

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

Being a new grandmother definitely tops the list! I also am a member of Mensa and Virginia Beach Christian Church.

What is your favorite place to vacation?

Italy!

What initially motivated you to join VSHP?

- I initially learned about VSHP at my college (Appalachian College of Pharmacy) on orientation week. I was motivated from the beginning to learn more about the field and connect with those that have similar goals and are smarter than me in the profession. I think that if we as students ever have an opportunity to pick another Pharmacist’s brain, then it is in our best interest to do so. I have learned that surrounding yourself with other like minded people will set yourself up for the greatest success in transitioning from an intern to a pharmacist. This trait about VSHP really stood out to me because of their values behind their organization. VSHP has the goal to promote a community of Pharmacists, from all areas within the field, and this really attracted me to the organization in furthering my education with others.

What school are you attending and what year?

- I am a P3 student at the Appalachian College of Pharmacy.

Do you currently work in a pharmacy and if so what practice setting?

- I currently have the opportunity to intern at a Walgreens pharmacy here in southwest Virginia. Shoutout to Walgreens store #09948! My daily responsibilities are to help in work-flow, complete Medication Therapy Management outcomes for our patients, communicate with other health care professionals in regards to treatment for patients, and of course help out with vaccinations (thanks COVID) among others. I want to continue my career after graduation in the community pharmacy, as it has given me the biggest sense of fulfillment in my early career.

What advice would you give to a P1 student or someone interested in pharmacy school?

- My biggest insight that I can give to an incoming student or one who wants to pursue pharmacy is to really try and get a general understanding for the Top 300 drugs. These will not only help with entry level work your P1 year, but will also get you into the habit of understanding what you really need to know when you start your pharmacotherapy courses. Working in a pharmacy prior to school and during school will be the biggest help in the success that a student has during school. You can definitely do well in pharmacy school with no background in drug knowledge or as a technician, but it definitely makes the process of pharmacy school smoother.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies outside of work?

- I am very interested in the field of personal development. I love reading books and listening to podcasts that will help further my knowledge in goal setting, career planning, entrepreneurship, my spiritual faith, etc. I am also obsessed with coffee, personal fitness, hanging out with my family, and watching the New York Yankees (when they are winning).

What is your favorite place to vacation?

- Without a doubt, my favorite place to go on vacation is to Disney World with my family. My brother and his wife had recently welcomed a boy (in photo) in early 2020, so I cannot wait to go as a bigger family.
