Management of Psychotropic Medication Adverse Events

Objectives for Pharmacists

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Discuss the epidemiology, clinical presentation, risk factors, and mechanisms of psychotropic medication-related adverse events.
Analyze current literature about prevention and management of psychotropic medication-related adverse events.
Identify appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for psychotropic medication-related adverse events.

Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Recognize common adverse events associated with psychotropic medications and identify patient factors that may increase the risk of these medication-related complications.

Describe strategies used to prevent and manage psychotropic medication-related adverse events, including the role of medication monitoring, patient education, and interdisciplinary communication.

Identify pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches used to address psychotropic medication-related adverse events and understand the pharmacy technician's role in supporting safe medication use.

Accreditation:

Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider for continuing pharmacy education and has assigned 1 contact hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credits for participating in this activity. Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event. Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time. The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.

1) Discuss new updates for cardiovascular risk assessment from the 2026 ACC/AHA Multisocietal Guidelines on the Management of Dyslipidemia
2) Summarize the pharmacological treatment algorithms and goals for therapy for primary and secondary prevention
3) Apply 2026 guideline-directed recommendations to a patient case Recognize how the characteristics of different anticoagulants affect their use peri-operatively

Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Summarize pharmacologic treatment approaches and therapeutic goals used for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
